If you've looked into injectable treatments for fine lines and wrinkles, you've probably encountered both Jeuveau and Botox. Both are neuromodulators. Both are injected in a provider's office. Both temporarily reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles — the lines formed by facial movement.
So what's actually different? And how do you decide which is right for you?
Here's a clear comparison — with the nuances that don't always make it into the brochure.
What Are Neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators are purified proteins derived from botulinum toxin type A. When injected in small, precise doses into targeted facial muscles, they temporarily block the nerve signals that cause those muscles to contract. Less muscle contraction means less skin folding, which means fewer visible lines.
The four FDA-approved neuromodulators currently available in the U.S. are Botox (AbbVie), Dysport (Galderma), Xeomin (Merz), and Jeuveau (Evolus). All four work through the same mechanism but have different formulations, unit measurements, and clinical profiles.
What Is Botox?
Botox Cosmetic has been FDA-approved for cosmetic use since 2002 and has the longest safety track record of any neuromodulator. It's the most widely recognized brand in the category — and for decades, it was essentially synonymous with the treatment itself.
Botox is manufactured by AbbVie (formerly Allergan) and remains the market leader. It typically takes effect in 3–5 days and lasts 3–4 months, with some patients experiencing longer duration as they develop a regular treatment cadence.
Best for:
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines (glabellar lines, the "11s")
- Crow's feet
- Brow lifting
- Lip flips and other off-label uses
What Is Jeuveau?
Jeuveau (pronounced "zhuh-VOH") is a newer neuromodulator from Evolus, FDA-approved in 2019. It's sometimes called "#Newtox" — a nod to it being a modern alternative to Botox with a fresher marketing identity aimed at younger aesthetic patients.
Like Botox, Jeuveau is a botulinum toxin type A product. Its clinical efficacy for treating glabellar lines (the frown lines between the brows) has been demonstrated in clinical trials with results comparable to Botox.
What makes Jeuveau different:
- It's manufactured using a proprietary Hi-Pure technology, resulting in a highly purified formulation
- It's approved specifically for glabellar lines (frown lines), though providers use it off-label in other areas
- It typically comes in at a slightly lower price point than Botox, making it attractive for cost-conscious patients
- Its onset and duration are similar to Botox: 3–5 days to take effect, 3–4 months duration

Does Jeuveau Feel or Look Different Than Botox?
Clinically, the results of Jeuveau and Botox are comparable when injected by an experienced provider. Most patients who've had both don't report a noticeable difference in outcome.
The nuance: neuromodulators spread slightly differently in tissue, and some providers have preferences based on the treatment area. An experienced injector at a reputable Chicago medspa will guide you based on your anatomy, the areas you're treating, and your goals.
The provider's skill matters far more than the brand. The same unit of Jeuveau or Botox injected at the wrong depth, in the wrong location, or in the wrong quantity produces very different results.
How to Choose Between Jeuveau and Botox
Choose Botox if:
- You've had successful Botox treatments before and don't want to introduce a variable
- You're treating multiple areas beyond just frown lines
- You want the broadest FDA-approval base and the longest track record
Consider Jeuveau if:
- You're new to neuromodulators and want to start with a slightly more affordable option
- You're primarily focused on your glabellar lines (frown lines)
- Your provider has experience with Jeuveau and recommends it for your anatomy
Either way, you'll be choosing from a well-studied, FDA-approved category of treatment. The difference at the level of the individual patient, in experienced hands, is typically subtle.
What About VI Peels in Chicago?
If you're exploring injectables, you may also be curious about chemical peels — particularly the VI Peel, one of the most popular medical-grade peels available.
The VI Peel is a mid-depth chemical peel formulated with a blend of trichloroacetic acid (TCA), salicylic acid, retinoic acid, vitamin C, and phenol. It's designed to:
- Improve skin texture and tone
- Reduce hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and melasma
- Stimulate collagen production
- Address early fine lines and acne scarring
Unlike Jeuveau and Botox — which address dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement — VI Peel targets surface and mid-layer skin concerns. Many patients combine a neuromodulator with a peel to address both categories simultaneously.
At The Vitamin Bar Chicago, we offer VI Peels alongside our injectable and IV wellness services — making it possible to address multiple aesthetic goals in a single appointment.
